The currently agreed deal to release the hostages still held in Gaza is made up of three phases of staggered releases over a period of 42 days each.
The first phase is made up of so-called “humanitarian” cases: children, women, elderly individuals (defined as those above the age of 50), and those hostages who need urgent medical attention.
The Israeli Government’s Hostages and Missing Persons Coordination Unit has reportedly notified the families of the 33 hostages expected to be set free in the first phase of the deal. As of the time of this writing, 24 hostages have been released. In the past few days, it has been announced that of the remaining 14 hostages, 8 are believed to be dead.
On 11 February, the community of Kibbutz Kissufim and the IDF announced that the eldest hostage Shlomo Mansour was murdered on October 7 and his body is held hostage in Gaza.
Contrary to some reports, there has not been a list of names of the dead hostages – only the number. The Israeli Government has been keeping families of hostages notified about any intelligence they have on the status of their loved ones including information obtained from released hostages.
