Minister affirms importance of Jewish life in Scotland at Edinburgh plenary

Media, Tourism and Creative Industries Minister Ian Murray MP has spoken of the importance of Scottish Jewish life at the Board’s special regional plenary in Edinburgh.

Mr Murray said: “The Jewish community is an integral, valued, and cherished part of British life. That is true in Edinburgh, it is true across Scotland, and it is true across the whole of the United Kingdom. Jewish people should be able to live openly, safely and proudly as Jews, to worship freely, to gather confidently, to send their children to school without fear and to wear visible signs of Jewish identity without hesitation and to participate fully in public life without intimidation, hostility or concealment.”

Deputies attending the Board of Deputies regional weekend gave a standing ovation to Mr Murray for his speech praising the contribution of the Jewish community to Scotland.

The minister added: “When the Board of Deputies comes to Edinburgh, it is more than just holding a meeting. It affirms a community. It strengthens ties, it says that Jewish life in Scotland is part of the wider story of British history, and it reminds us that representation matters, especially when communities are under such pressure.”

At the plenary, attended in person by 50 Deputies with many more online, the Board also announced that it has been awarded Special Consultative Status to the UN ECOSOC. The role will be used to advocate for policies and matters of significant importance to Board members including the fight against antisemitism, extremism and terrorism, advancing peace and security, celebrating Jewish culture and heritage, and protecting religious freedoms.

Deputies attended Friday night dinner and Shabbat lunch at Edinburgh Hebrew Congregation. Deputies also attended prayers at both Edinburgh Hebrew Congregation and Edinburgh Liberal Jewish Community.

Board of Deputies Acting President Adrian Cohen spoke about the work the Board undertakes on behalf of the UK British Jewish community.

Following the weekend, Adrian Cohen said: “Deputies experienced a wonderful Regional Weekend thanks to the Edinburgh Jewish community and especially local Deputy Edward Green and the Board’s Deputy and Community Engagement Manager Sara Radivan. It was a great opportunity for the Board to discuss regional strategy and outreach, as well as to engage with Minister of State Ian Murray.”

The regional weekend reinforced the Board’s commitment to representing Jewish communities throughout the UK and to working collaboratively with partners at local and national levels.
