A “heartfelt” message of solidarity has been sent to the UK Jewish community on behalf of His Majesty King Charles, marking the anniversary of the 2023 Hamas attacks.
In the letter, the King’s Principal Private Secretary Sir Clive Alderton, wrote:
“His Majesty recalls with great emotion and sadness the events of 7 October, 2023.
“His Majesty has asked me to express his heartfelt good wishes to the Jewish community, who play such an import role in our Nation’s life.”
Sir Clive was replying to a letter from Board of Deputies President Phi Rosenberg in which he wrote:
“As we mark the third anniversary of the 7 October 2023 attacks in Israel, a range of events are taking place across the UK to mark this sombre anniversary. The Board of Deputies wished to bring these commemorations to The King’s attention and, in so doing, assure His Majesty of the loyalty and affection of the Jewish community together with their profound gratitude for his acts of solidarity.”
NOTE
British Jews across the UK held vigils and ceremonies on 7 October to remember the events of that day, hear testimony from survivors and family members, and honour those lost and their loved ones.
Of the nearly 1,200 people killed in the attack, 18 were British. Of the 251 taken captive, 17 were British or had close British family members and 8 of those lost their lives in captivity.
