COMMUNITY IN FOCUS: Young World Jewish Relief Committee

Young World Jewish Relief Committee co-Chairs, Rosa Shaul, a Relationship Manager at HSBC Private Banking, and Katie Neville, Senior Finance Manager at Marks and Spencer, joined the committee after graduating from university, looking to raise awareness and fundraise for the charity’s global work.

Pre-pandemic they hosted a range of events, from supper quizzes and boat parties to speakers at the House of Lords. During the pandemic, the committee have worked hard to keep up the momentum by adapting their events. Recent events have included a virtual comedy night with some impressive headline acts, a socially distanced summer picnic and a drive-in cinema event. The committee are working on their fourth event, a collaboration with The A-gency – a new Jewish blind dating agency founded by Aimee Belchak.

Rosa and Katie believe it is important that the young Jewish community are engaged in the work of World Jewish Relief; not only should the community be profoundly proud of what the charity does, but through this committee and their reach, young Jews are gaining an awareness and connection to the charity which will help secure its future.

World Jewish Relief is the British Jewish community’s international humanitarian agency. Inspired by Jewish values, World Jewish Relief empowers people in poverty to live with dignity, self-reliance, and hope. The charity does such a vast range of work – supporting older people in Eastern Europe, creating employment opportunities, responding to emergencies, and working with refugees – there is something everyone can connect to. World Jewish Relief supports the world’s poorest Jewish communities, predominantly in Eastern Europe, where both Rosa and Katie have visited.

The charity’s work extends beyond our community, inspired by the Jewish values of caring for the stranger and recognising the dignity and potential of all people. World Jewish Relief’s STEP programme has helped almost 1,000 refugees find work in the UK. It is inspired by their experience helping some of the world’s poorest Jewish communities and beyond get into work, and by their founding history helping Jewish refugees in the 1930s and ‘40s to build new lives in Britain. As the grandchildren of refugees, Rosa and Katie feel passionate about this part of the World Jewish Relief’s outreach.

The Young World Jewish Relief Committee welcome all those interested to the events and in supporting the organisation, and would be happy to speak to anyone interested in finding out more or getting involved in the committee. World Jewish Relief’s young professionals programme has been made possible with the generous support of Genesis Philanthropy Group – www.gpg.org.
