The Board of Deputies has welcomed the decision by the European Union to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation and has renewed its call for the UK Government to take equivalent action without further delay.
Responding to the announcement, Senior Vice President Adrian Cohen said:
“Yesterday the EU Council designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation. It is long overdue that the UK government fulfil its commitment and do likewise. In 2025, the then Home Secretary announced plans for new powers to proscribe state-backed groups that would cover the IRGC, however this would appear still to be work in progress.“The IRGC poses a direct threat not only to Iran’s neighbours and Iranian protesters, but to the UK, including the British Jewish community. We will continue to press the UK government to use all means at its disposal to confront this threat without further delay.”
