Board of Deputies President meets faith leaders, community representatives, students and synagogue members on Liverpool visit

Board of Deputies President Phil Rosenberg spent a long weekend in Liverpool as a guest of the Liverpool Jewish community and local Deputies.

On Friday, Phil addressed Jewish pupils at King David High School and met pupils from the Primary School. He also met faith leaders and representatives at the King David Campus including the Rector of Liverpool Rev Philip Anderson, the Archbishop of Liverpool Rev John Sherrington, Rabbi Warren Elf of Liverpool Reform Synagogue and Vice Chair of the Merseyside Jewish Representative Council and Project Worker of the L8 Interfaith Walk Project Zarah Ross.

Accompanied by Merseyside Jewish Representative Council Chair Jeremy Wolfson, Phil was delighted to see the Galkoff exhibit at the Museum of Liverpool and to meet Liz Stewart, Head of Museum of Liverpool. Liz expressed her enthusiasm for the museum’s participation in the Board of Deputies’ inaugural Jewish Culture Month in May/June 2026.

On Friday evening Phil davened at Allerton Synagogue followed by a dinner at which 80 guests heard him speak about the work of the Board of Deputies. He outlined its five priorities of fighting antisemitism, standing up for peace and security in Israel and the Middle East, defending religious freedoms, making our community more united, inclusive and outward looking and celebrating the faith, heritage and culture of British Jews. Phil repeated his presentation the following morning at a Kiddunch following the service at Childwall Synagogue. On Saturday evening Phil met Jewish students and members of JSoc at Hillel House where he heard about the challenges the students currently face on campus, as well as the strength and resilience with which they are responding.

Thirty people attended Shacharit davening on Sunday morning at Princes Road Synagogue followed by a bagel breakfast. Phil then visited the Cheder at the Liverpool Reform Synagogue where he met with many parents and also visited MATT Cheder at Childwall Synagogue. Later that day, Phil delivered his presentation to approximately 60 members of St Annes Hebrew Congregation in the Synagogue hall.

Local Deputies included Childwall Hebrew Congregation Sue Huglin, Allerton Synagogue Victor Huglin, Liverpool Reform Synagogue Benjamin Globe, Merseyside Jewish Representative Council Gordon Globe and Jewish Lads and Girls Brigade Alfie Blumenow.

Jeremy Wolfson, Chair of the Merseyside Jewish Representative Council said “It was fantastic to have Phil Rosenberg spend Shabbat in Liverpool and to be in the city for the whole weekend. Phil is a great orator and there was a terrific turnout to hear him speak about the vital work of the Board at all his community engagements. I know how busy Phil’s schedule is, so I thank him for spending time with our community which I know was very much appreciated by everyone.”
