Born and raised not far from South London, Mandy met her husband on a volunteering trip to Israel in her 20's.She fell in love and never left. She has lived in Kibbutz Kfar Aza for over 30 years. Until October 7th, she lived there with her four children and four grandchildren and worked as anursery school teacher on the kibbutz, teaching English in her spare time. On October 7th,her life was turned upside down when Emily (at the time age 27) was kidnapped by Hamas in the early morning. Read more about Emily.

Barak Deri

Barak's story is one of incredible strength. His courage, determination, and dedication to his fellow soldiers are truly inspiring. Barak is a reservist in an elite unit Sayeret Matkal. On October 7th, he was one of the first soldiers sent to Kibbutz Be'eri. That morning, he faced a heartbreaking decision: should he stay and fight at the kibbutz or go rescue his younger brother, who was badly injured and waiting for hours after the terrorist attack at the Nova
festival, surrounded by the Hamas terrorists.

In December 2023, Barak took part in a special mission to rescue hostages. After a long and fierce battle with Hamas terrorists, the mission failed, and Barak was critically injured. His condition was so bad that doctors declared he wouldn’t survive the helicopter ride to the hospital, and they couldn’t give him proper care because of the many other wounded soldiers. Eventually, the hospital treatment saved his life. After nine months of tough
recovery, Barak's spirit is still strong.
