Jonathan Arkush pays tribute to Jack Lunzer

Board of Deputies President Jonathan Arkush has paid tribute to Jack Lunzer, who has died at the age of 93.

He said: “I was saddened to learn of the passing of Jack Lunzer . He built up one of the world’s most significant collections of rare Hebrew books and manuscripts, known as the Valmadonna Trust Library.  Its 13,000 works included many rare and unique specimens, some dating back more than 800 years to the dawn of printed books in Hebrew.  Jack generously maintained a shul in his beautiful home adjoining Hampstead Heath which he opened to members of a local congregation which worshipped there every Friday night.  I myself prayed there just last Friday, although sadly Jack was too unwell to join us.  Before his health declined Jack was a convivial host and raconteur.  His huge personality will be much missed.”
