Jewish community leaders hold talks with Plaid Cymru over Sahar Al-Faifi candidacy

Board of Deputies Senior Vice President Sheila Gewolb, Vice President Amanda Bowman and Laurence Kahn, Chair of the South Wales Jewish Representative Council, have met Plaid Cymru MP Liz Saville Roberts, the chair of the party’s upcoming Antisemitism review.

Dr Gewolb said: “Plaid Cymru’s Sahar Al-Faifi has talked up ‘Rothschild’ conspiracy theories, blamed the Westminster Bridge terrorist attack on ‘Zionists’ and laid responsibility for the murder of George Floyd on Israel, and yet is somehow still a candidate for Plaid Cymru in the upcoming assembly elections.

“That is the context under which Plaid Cymru are looking to launch a review into antisemitism. While Plaid Cymru’s Standing Orders reflect the general priniciple that an individual cannot face a disciplinary hearing twice for the same incident, this shows the uphill – and potentially impossible task the review faces – in ensuring there is no place for antisemitism in the party.

“We appreciate the opportunity to feed into the review and will continue to press the party into ensuring it is tackling antisemitism fully.”
