The Board of Deputies of British Jews has issued the following statement in response to the announcement last week of a framework agreement with Iran to be signed by the end of June, aimed at curbing that country’s nuclear ambitions:
“The Board welcomes steps that halt Iran’s nuclear ambitions, but we would be concerned were sanctions to be removed in the absence of clear evidence demonstrating that Iran was complying with the framework agreement and robust verification procedures to ensure that it continues to do so.
“It is hard to trust Iran at a time when it is exporting terrorism around the world through proxies such as Hezbollah and Boko Haram and continues to suppress the human rights of women and minorities within its own country.
“It is also time that the leadership in Tehran fully distanced itself from extremism and Holocaust denial.”
