Board of Deputies welcomes rejection of far-right in Austria

Board of Deputies Senior Vice President Richard Verber has welcomed the rejection of far-right candidate Norbert Hofer by the Austrian electorate in yesterday’s re-run of the country’s presidential elections.

He said: “While feeling a sense of relief, we must also express our concern that such a significant number of people were prepared to forget the evils that the populist far-right wrought in their country in the last century. It is imperative that all those who believe in open societies free from bigotry and xenophobia work together to fight the wave of far-right populism that we are currently experiencing.”
