Board of Deputies welcome announcement that Modern and Biblical Hebrew are to be safeguarded

Sheila Gewolb, Vice President of the Board of Deputies, has responded to an announcement by the Department for Education that both Modern and Biblical Hebrew will continue to be taught as examination subjects.

Sheila said: “We welcome the announcement that Modern and Biblical Hebrew are to safeguarded at both GCSE and A-Level. The Board of Deputies has long campaigned to protect Modern and Biblical Hebrew, which are languages of our faith and culture, and of the modern State of Israel. Indeed, this was a key issue in the Jewish manifesto we produced for last year’s General Election. We are delighted at the result and very grateful to the Secretary of State, the Department for Education, exam boards and publishers who have worked with us to make this possible.”
